Gourmet Caramel Apples

Gourmet Caramel Apples

Gourmet caramel apples are one of my favorite holiday treats. Just the fact that there’s a piece of fruit inside makes me feel okay about eating layers and layers of candy!

I chose three different apples for this recipe and went with three different flavor combinations on top of the caramel: mini dark chocolate chips, drizzled dark chocolate and white chocolate, and (my favorite) melted dark chocolate dipped in toffee bits… I loved the sweetness of the caramel and chocolate, mixed with the saltiness of the toffee and the tartness of the green apple!

It’s so easy to make fancy looking caramel apples at home. Keep reading for simple directions and some helpful hints!

  • 13 oz caramel squares
  • 5-6 apples
  • toppings: melted chocolate, mini chocolate chips, toffee bits, nuts, sprinkles, crushed cookies, chopped candy bars
  • skewers, popsicle sticks, or twigs*

Wash apples with soap ad warm water to clean off any wax. Use a knife to cut out the apple’s stem and make a small hole. Insert a stick and push it down into the center of the apple.

Lay out a sheet of wax paper and give it a light coating of cooking spray.

Melt caramel squares according to package directions (I melted mine in a bowl in the microwave with just a little bit of water).

Dip an apple into the melted caramel and spoon caramel over the top of the apple until it is completely coated. Pull the apple out of the caramel and allow any excess to drip off, use a knife to smooth caramel off of the bottom of the apple. Place apple onto sheet of waxed paper to cool (popping apples into the fridge will speed up the cooling process).

What I learned through the process:

  • Make sure that caramel is thoroughly melted. If caramel is too thick, it will end up lumpy on your apples.
  • Let apples cool SLIGHTLY before rolling in nuts or chocolate chips. If caramel is too warm, toppings will slide right off of the apple and chocolate chips will melt.
  • Let apples cool COMPLETELY before drizzling melted chocolate over them.

*If you do choose to use twigs, rinse them well with soapy water, then let dry. Wrap a small amount of foil around the end of the twig before placing it into the apple.

Store apples in the fridge, remove 15 minutes or so before eating. I like to slice apples for serving. It’s fun to sample all of the different flavor combinations! Eat within a few days of making.

  1. Gorgeous photos, that tin cake stand is adorable, too! These look delicious. I like the idea of slicing them, that way they can still look pretty when presented but are more practical to eat.

  2. So gorgeous. I want to try one now. Can’t recall ever seeing a caramel apple over here. We have whole toffee apples on sticks and more recently I have been drizzling apple crisps with toffee for a healthy sweet fix. Will have to try this out on my children. The perfect Halloween trick or treat offering perhaps.
